If you are having a collapsing problem, that means you are probably trying to make the room to big. The max distance any roofed area can be from a wall without collapsing is 6 tiles.

6 tiles from any wall allows rooms up to 12 interior spaces wide, and that can be at any length. So you can have a 12x30 room for example. Once you have any tile not within 6 tiles from a wall you will need to start either building supports, or leaving a stone tile un-mined to leave it behind as a support.

Without mod's you can't remove the roof.
You just can made big caves, you need to keep a few pilar's every 10/12 spaces.

This is Rimworld, not Dwarf Fortress.  You're not supposed to build mega landscaping projects.  You're supposed to build mega freezers instead and butcher humans in them to make hats.
If you give an annoying colonist a parka before banishing him to the ice sheet you'll only get a -3 penalty instead of -5.

And don't forget that the pirates chasing a refugee are often better recruits than the refugee is.

Hats? You're being too kind. I just eat 'em

Especially if you're playing a sea ice challenge... yum

If 666 is evil, does that make 25.8069758011 the root of all evil?

You can remove thin rock roof with the orange tool called forbidden roof area or something like that but you cant remove overhead mountain. if its a small hills (depending on how small) it could have just thin roof but if you dont remove it manually it will keep falling.

If you wanna cheat a little bit, go into dev mode and select the option: Remove Roof. It will take down anything

Since the colonists have not mastered basic movement in non-regular terrain, like swimming or climbing, they can only remove the parts of a hill at the bottom

Tynan explained that its basically a mountain. What happens if you mine a mountain at the base level? You still have a mountain over your head taht will keep falling. Of course you could theoretically end up mining the whole mountain that keeps falling... But thats not happening in RW and its very unrealistic.

But you've gotta do something with the leather. It's worth a lot, so you could just outright sell it.

But yeah, the game is 2D but those are actually larger hills and mountains. You can actually remove the edges of some hills I think, but eventually it's too much earth to move.

why don't you build wooden support beams and than burn the beams so your colonists can get out before it collapses.  This would be much easier with incendiary grenades I do realize, but pehaps find a way to inclose the beam as well and raise the temperature in the enclosed area or use an incendiary rocket launcher as I don't think you can trigger manually an incendiary ied. or just build the support and leave the roof be....

RazorHed

I think there needs to be an event where if you mine out too many tiles with overhead mountains , it triggers a long run out landslide that puts new stone chunks in a path away from the mountain that would destroy trees and buildings in its way :)    I'm kind of kidding , but maybe I should delete because Tynan might read it and  have an Evilgasm haha

This is what I do for my own landscaping projects.
