About the fixin' I believe that Caravans should have better calculation or explanition on the time necessary to travel.

Not only once, the caravan took longer than necessary and food became a problem, even though it should last 2 days plus the described.

Does this have something to do with the seasons? I think the season may have changed to winter and your caravan got bogged down in the snow mid trip. I noticed that a caravan that takes 5 days during spring summer took over a season mid winter. That would need a bit of predicting.

Yeah, the calculation must be precise, or it should be informed to the player by a letter (The caravan faces a snowstorm and it would be better to stay put for a while. The caravan will wait 3 days.)

I for one, sends my colonists to the farthest the food can get them. So any error will be troublesome

Caravans are super cool however they need some adjustment! What problems do you have with caravans? I will start and list a few...

1. Caravan departure spot

I have a big base and my muffalo decided to convene really really far away from my stock pile. Now there is no way for me to get the muffalo to just convene in my stockpile. And now that is going to create a lot more problems....

Say what?

maybe allow caravans to intentionally "camp" in temporary maps the way they stop in temporary maps with combat.  Allowing you to stop and heal someone who you didn't realize was bleeding to death from a single tiny would on their 3 day journey without having to create and abandon a new settlement

The unpredictability in the caravans arises due to changes in movement speed & you can track this by monitoring the health of individuals.

When a random encounter occurs movement gets reset back the start of the square. So if you were 1hour away from the village and you got hit with a random encounter your travel time goes back to 8 hrs. Kind of annoying bug

We need to be able to set caravan world spawn hex. Or flat hexes need to be preferred.
My caravan always spawns in the west, south or east mountains, instead of the only flat hex in the north. That could save 2-3 days worth of food.

Already available when you create your caravan in the tab configuration.
I will never do worse than what I do now.
It's what self-improvement means.

Would still be nice if it saved the last direction (assuming the direction is legal still) instead of picking randomly.

You can still change each time you create a caravan and in the future some people will send caravans to a ot of differnt directions. Personnally, I prefer the option like it is at the moment.
I would like just they change the name of the tab from "Configuration" to "Direction".

Yeah, it saves me some clicks still, since I make many trades with the neighboring colony, and want to pick the same exit direction. It's a small QoL fix.

EDIT: One more thing, when forming a caravan for prisoners, if you cancel formation, the prisoner should go back to his cell, not try to escape because he is outside his cell.

I'd like to see another speed setting for time.  Even at max speed my caravans take their sweet time moving across the globe.  It took so long last night that I decided to fold laundry while I was waiting for them to travel from the equator to the north pole where the AI ship is waiting.

TL;DR- Need ludicrous speed for caravan travel.

There is actually a fourth speed which can be selected by pressing "4"(default hotkey), it doesn't have a UI button but if you are on the third speed and hit the hotkey, it will deselect the triple arrow.

I must be dense but how do I load cargo onto animals like mufallo ? I can only attach something like 30 kg. I have no mufallos, but I do have trained elephants.

Right now the only animals that can carry stuff in caravans are muffalo and dromedarys (camels).
