What happens to outdoor lights - wood-burning torch lamps and electrical lights - in rain? Amazingly, Google did not provide me the answer to this.

If they are destroyed by the rain, would they be made safe from water damage by placing them next to a wall with a 1x1 roof over them?

Torch lamps consume extra fuel if they're out in the rain. (Double, if memory serves, or close to it.) Standing lamps are not affected by the rain, unlike most electrical devices.

I'm fairly sure torches will be protected by a roof. The only tile that would matter is the one they're in, not any neighbors.

I can confirm that a roof tile protects outside torches, campfires, and similar modded buildings from going out.

Electric Devices in Rain are prone to Power Failures and Explosions.
The fire is put out instantly most of the time, but the damage is still there.

I don't know if that has changed for Standing Lamps now, but I always roof over light sources just to be sure. With the roof mechanic this has become really easy and walls are cheap and always useful in combat.
Maxim 1   : Pillage, then burn
Maxim 37 : There is no overkill. There is only open fire and reload.
Rule 34 of Rimworld :There is a mod for that.

If the electrical device is close to a wall.
Just assign the roofed area from the wall to the device, and once the roof is build you can remove roofed area from the wall to the device and you got a flying roof.
But like spacedorf mention, a 1x1 wall/door can give you some tactical advance.

I used to this with sunlamps by putting roof tiles on their heads.

I like making the paths lit up. But it's kinda werid that standing lamps would explode in the rain.

I knows that outdoor lamps exist IRL. It makes kinda sense for the sun lamp to go boom in a rain for balance reasons but still...

At least putting roof covers and two pillars are good cover for your colonists and others :)

EDIT:Huh i didn't know that trick. I should try that out sometime in the game.

One "happy family" in the rims...

Standing lamps have an explicit comp attribute making them immune to electrical fires from rain. I actually checked when I saw this thread because I wasn't sure either.

They explode in the snow, too!
Wait, what..?!  Which is it?
Thanks, belgord!

Standing lamps work normally, torches burn out quickly. Roof tiles prevent this.
Confirmed.

I apologize.  I meant "Things that explode in the Rain explode in the Snow too".
