General Discussion / Re: The Problem With Royalty
September 25, 2020, 06:25:31 PM
I was thinking about your comments and led me to another question.

Why is the Stellarch with the fleet and not down on the surface?

There are a few plausible explanations.

1. We are in the very early stages of colonization. OR
2. The Empire doesn't intend to make this the new capital of their Empire or even stay for long at all.

The second explanation is definitely intriguing. It made me think of Battlestar Galactica (Empire is really a cross between BSG and Warhammer 40K). In BSG, the fleet could never stay in one place for long because they were being pursued by the Cylons, which had destroyed their home planets. They'd stop at planets to acquire resources, but they had to keep moving.

Is the Empire still on the run from whatever killed off their Empire?

There could be more mundane explanations though.

Maybe the Stellarch plans to install a minor Noble to oversee this planet and establish his capital on another world? That would also make sense.

It's fun thinking about this stuff!

General Discussion / The Problem With Royalty
September 24, 2020, 09:57:42 PM
Every time I start a new play through, I'm faced with a challenge. Royalty or not Royalty? With Royalty the game play is much better. But the main problem I have is the thematic feel of the Empire Faction and how it fits into the story I'm trying to tell.

The main thing I struggle with is, the Empire seems incredibly powerful. Advanced weapons, armor, and a fleet in orbit around the planet. Why are they not completely dominating the planet? The obvious answer would be that another faction is powerful enough to challenge them, but the other factions, thematically speaking, just don't seem up to the task.

Now the most enjoyable Royalty game I played was with faction control. Empire and mechanoids as the only faction with plenty of MODS to supe up the Mechanoids. Now that was a fun game because thematically, it felt like the Empire was locked in a war that they could very well lose. But the mechanoids don't even have bases so it still felt a little incomplete.

So most of my games are still with regular 1.2.

I guess my point is that since the Empire is an Epic kind of faction, they need an Epic enemy to fight for control of the planet. Any modded factions out there up to the task?

Note: To learn more about Triumph and the Supremacy of Noln, Check out my Other Story. Colony Log of the Everglades Settlement

Rimworld Triumph: Nation: Supremacy of Noln. Subject <Interview 55621>

The video feed shows a disheveled middle aged man with a peg leg for his left leg. The man has a full beard and is wearing an orange prison jum suit. He appears to be sitting down in a dimly lit concrete room. His interrogator can not be seen in the video.

Q. Interrogator (Int): Let's go over this again. From the top. Your name.

A. Why are we doing this again? I swear we're not a threat to you people.

Q. It takes as long as it takes. Now once again. Your name.

A. <Sigh> It's Vector.

Q. Where were you born?

A. An urbworld, it's called Hetin. I don't know where it is relative to this place.

Q. What was your occupation?

A. Before I got laid off, I worked on an assembly line

Q. How did you come to Triumph?

A. When I got laid off, the Megacorporation enrolled me in the new colony lottery thing. I won a spot and got to join a  group of colonists heading for an animal world in a different system.

Q. So you went to an animal world?
A. Yes, it didn't have a name. The AI persona had a long number in its database for the planet and the star, but I can't remember it off the top of my head. I just know it was supposed to be an animal world.

Q. So it wasn't an animal world then?
A. Well it is. But <sigh> I really don't want to go through this again.

Q. What happened when you reached the animal world?
A. Ummm, things didn't go completely right. The AI persona discharged the crews' escape pods while in orbit and then landed at an undesignated landing site far away from where the escape pods landed. Most of the supplies landed with us though, so it could have been worse.

Q. What happened after that?
A. <Sounding annoyed> What do you mean, what happened? We built a colony there. It was hot as hell, but the soil was good for growing, and we grew more than enough. We could never find enough steel though.

Q. I understand you had a wife on this colony?
A. Yeah, her name was Mila.

Q. Where is Mila right now?
A. Probably long dead considering I'm in another star system. She divorced me, then got pregnant with some other guy. They were part of the group that stayed behind.

<Pause> <Sic>

Q. Vector, you are getting ahead of yourself again.
A. Right, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Look, can I get a glass of water. I need a break.

<Transmission Cuts out> <Cuts in 10 minutes later>

Q. Vector we need to talk about what you are really doing here on Triumph.
A. What do you mean, really doing?

Q. In our last discussion, you claimed that your colony was repeatedly attacked by large groups of intelligent insectoidss, and that these attacks eventually forced you, and four other people to leave the planet. You claim that the insects burrowed through open ground and swarmed your settlement in waves until you could forcibly bury the tunnels. You talk about types of insectoids that we've never heard of, these Megapedes, Gigalocusts and such. And then there's this insectoid queen with psychic powers that appeared to you in your nightmares, even though you never saw it in person. <Sigh> I'm sorry Vector, but I just dont find that to be credible.

A. You're wrong about one part. The attacks didn't force anyone to leave. We held our own. I just didn't want to live with my ex anymore. The others had their reasons as well. Everyone had to make their own choice at the end.

Q. Are you going to make a choice to tell me the truth Vector?

A. <Sounding frustrated> What do you want me to say to get out of here? That I made it all up, like it's crazy stuff? Just ask the others that you found with me. They'll tell you the same story.

Q. Vector, I need you to be honest with me. Are there any more interstellar ships bound for Triumph?
A. No ... well not that I know of.

Q. Are you part of a military, pirate, vigilante or paramilitary organization?
A. No

Q. Who do you currently work for?
A. No one, I'm just a refugee!

Q. How did you lose your left leg?
A. Shrapnel from a grenade. While we were trying to fend off a group of megaspiders.

Q. Was the megaspider found in the mountains?
A. No, the colony was on flat terrain. It was just a groyup of them that attacked one time.

Q. That's impossible. Listen to yourself. All the known worlds were developed using the same terraforming techniques. Insectoids were just part of biosphere development. Megaspiders live in mountains and deep underground. They don't just roam around on the surface. Everyone knows that. Basic insterstellar biology.

A. Fine, you want to know the truth. I'll tell you the truth. I hated my ex, so me and a few other disgruntled colonists stole the ship after it landed. The insectoid stuff is nonsense.

Q. Vector, I finally feel like we are getting somewhere. Let's talk more tomorrow morning.

Custom Scenario: Midworld Suburbs (Removed mandatory sickly trait). (If I do this play through again I'd recommend making at least 50% of characters incapable of violence). MODS of consequence: Vanilla Events Expanded , Communicable Diseases, Children and Pregnancy.

Excerpts from Our History: The Rimworld of Triumph, Textbook for Children, 3rd Edition

The treaty of Westphaxia marked the end of the period of great chaos. The treaty consolidated the planet's factions into two nations, the Confederacy of Gao and the Supremacy of Noln. The indigenous tribes were granted semi- autonomous status within each of the two new nations.

The Confederacy of Gao embraced a decentralized libertarian capitalist philosophy of governance. Slavery, recreational narcotics and, other traditional vices remained legal, though the government attempted to regulate these practices. Corruption was also exceptionally high in the confederacy and the payment of bribes to obtain government services was common practice. The government was widely viewed as weak and ineffective in all areas of life.

The Supremacy of Noln embraced a centralized socialist model of governance under the rule of a single revolutionary political party. The persecution of political dissidents and force-able removal of indigenous peoples from their native lands was common place.

The treaty of Westphaxia mandated the following:
Each nation was prohibited from exceeding industrial level technology. Specific prohibited technologies included the following: Atomic weapons, ballistic missiles, manned spaceflight, artificial intelligence, robotics, ultra-tech biological enhancements, and other areas of human knowledge long forgotten on Triumph.

Interplanetary Trade:  The treaty however  did allow for trade with the neighboring advanced midworld of Excelladus.  As Excelladus exists in the same stellar system as Triumph, they would be allowed to send their interplanetary transports and shuttles to trade with the nations. However, immigration and technological transfers were expressly prohibited. Footnote: As Excelladus was only a moderately advanced midworld, they lacked the technological capability to mount a full interplanetary invasion of Triumph.

The Pirate Threat:

Within five years of the signing of the treaty, the two nations were able to greatly reduce the pirate threat within their borders.  Settlements no longer came under regular attack from pirate raids. However, criminal activity continued in both nations as pirates continued to ambush travelers and small caravans along the roadways. It would be many more years before the roads were made completely safe for travelers.

[That establishes the setting, next will be the log of the colony]

Good story. I'm just happy yo see some activity on these forums. I feel like I'm the only one writing rim fiction these days, which is odd because with all the new mods and content, the gameplay has never been better!

Stories / Re: What's a Midworld Anyway? (Story)
September 05, 2020, 07:12:19 AM
The Way The Story Ended:

Narrator: Now as it so happened, that group of mechanoids was quickly wiped out by a passing tribal caravan. But not long after that a defoliator ship part landed and slowly started to poison the landscape. The villagers tried to scrape together everything they could to bribe a local military leader to intervene so it wasn't enough. That's when Alexis, the acting village administrator, decided to awaken the occupants of the crypt.

An ancient soldier awoke and went on a rampage, killing four colonists including Alexis.

Soon therafter one of the surviving colonists tried to kill someone and was killed in self defense.

This left one woman alive, a former wanderer joined Marle.

Marle was about to leave when the military finally showed up to wipe out the mechanoids, though by this time the defoliator had destroyed much of the land.

That's when something really odd happened. A real estate agent showed up with a young family. The agent asked if Marle owned one of the home and, being the only survivor said sure.

So she sold one of the homes to the new occupants and left for a new community.

This new community was having the same debate, Midworld or Rimworld? Marle decided to weigh in.

"A rimworld to be sure. But a little better than it used to be. I'll leave it at that."

Ideas / Event: Caravan Turned Traitor
September 04, 2020, 08:27:33 PM
Take the wanderer turned traitor event from Vanilla Events Expanded and apply it to a caravan.

A friendly caravan approaches. They pass your defenses and enter your base...then they all turn into enemies and attack.

Now could you imagine combining this with a regular raid event at the same time?

Stories / Rimworld Roleplay (All Welcome)
September 01, 2020, 09:07:57 PM
Let's roleplay with our favorite rim world characters! This could be some fun collective story telling. Try to stick to vanilla themes. I.E. No warhammer 40K/starwars/ anything else. This is rimworld RP.

Rules: No violence. (For now)

The setting: It was a rimworld but no one could agree on its name. The tribals had one name for it, the outlanders called it something else. The more recently arrived Empire also had their own name for it. Each faction claimed the world for its own, but no one could control it. The Empire had the strongest army by far, and a powerful fleet in orbit. But their numbers were far smaller than the other factions and their people were weary of war. And so, the Empire had settled into a grinding low intensity conflict with its neighbors, interspersed with temporary ceasefires much as all the other factions had with each other so long ago.

But there were some neutral places where any man or woman from any faction could spend a night in peace, buy a drink at a bar, and trade.

Bartertown was one of those places. It was a wooden walled community in a temperate forest with a moderate temperature, (30 day growing period) and it was run by a minor splinter outlander faction and ruled by a fierce warrior of a woman, believed to have been a former tribal.

Anyone could come to barter or trade in an open aired market, buy a drink at the bar, shoot some pool, hire a prostitute, or watch some nonsense on a black and white tube television.

It was fall in Bartertown and business was busy. Everyone was coming to make their last trades before the harsh winter set in

Artur arrived on his donkey at nightfall. He was a tall broad shouldered man with a bald head. He wore a leather parka, leather pants, and a cloth tuque over his head and carried an assault rifle with him. When he arrived at Bartertown, he checked his assault rifle in with the gate guard who gave him a quick pat down just to make sure he wasn't sneaking anything in. That was the rules, of the town, no weapons.

Once he had checked in he stabled his donkey and made his way to the bar. He was looking forward to drinking heartily this evening before turning himself in at the guest room.

The obvious solution would be to make a MOD. Long range artillery and ballistic missiles.

Problem solved!

Do you mean an antigrain waarhead fired from a mortar?
#60
That reminds me of the time a colonist had a mental break and intentionally destroyed a stock pile of 500 chemfuel. My whole colony died in the resulting building fire.

Lesson learned. Firepoppers are your friend!

Now is it just me or does Randy love killing players with fire?
