Great!  Glad to hear it.  :)

Nope. Tried multiple reinstalls/verify game caches/opt ins to beta version/etc. and nothing. Every time it just goes to black screen with game cursor and music.

Any updates, Draycos559?

Sorry for the delay. Memory usage is only at 35% of 8GB while running the game (152.2MB for Rimworld, specifically). I'm just using Windows defender. Game is still black screen even in alt-tab mini viewing mode.

It seems like Win10 doesn't really like DirectX 9 for some reason.

Try Windows Update and see if anything DX-related updates.

Failing that, try this:

EDIT
TLDR = You probably need an updated from MS here:

I tried multiple things to get the black screen to stop coming up after the few seconds of loading but nothing would work. Then I had realised... Somehow my 'Core' folder had been deleted!! I put core back and that made it completely work again. So as a future notice for other black screeners, if the other things dont work. Update or check your 'Core' is ok

If you are using a laptop (I am assuming this from your log file - Renderer: Intel(R) HD Graphics), then are you using the video drivers supplied by Intel or by your laptop manufacturer?

My Win10 laptop automatically installs the latest Intel H4000 drivers, so I'm wondering if yours is doing the same, and if so, then maybe changing to your laptop manufacturers drivers would work. (That is assuming your manufacturer has reasonably up-to-date drivers, and that Win10 won't just automatically overwrite them with the Intel drivers shortly after).

DirectX updater said I already had current/newer version installed. Couldn't find anything DirectX related in any windows updates either. Not sure where my core folder would be located, but steam has repeatedly verified my game cache so I doubt that's it (dunno if your comment was directed at me). I am on a laptop and unfortunately HP doesn't feel like providing upgraded drivers past whatever operating system your laptop started on, so upgrading drivers is a no go. I think I'm currently using some older drivers installed in compatibility mode or some such nonsense. Still black screen on launch, considering getting a refund at this point.

Having the same issues.  nothing is working thru Steam.

milon

@4enzik81, what have you tried so far?  What's your operating system?

@Draycos559, when you get the black screen, try pressing Alt+Tab to switch away from RimWorld.  Then Alt+Tab again to switch back to RimWorld.  It worked for another user.  If that doesn't work, try running RimWorld itself in compatibility mode (see https://steamcommunity.com/app/253250/discussions/0/535152511350119421/, but make the changes for RimWorld instead).

Please post success or failure so we can continue to help you & others.

Tried alt-tabbing to no effect. I tried running compatibility mode both as you suggested as well as by using the troubleshoot compatibility option with both Windows 8 and 7 options. None had any effect.

Edit: Thanks to everyone who tried to help. Unfortunately, nothing has worked or improved the situation so I went ahead and submitted a refund request with Steam before my 14 days were up. Hope you're able to help the other guy.

@ Draycos559 - I'm sorry that we were unable to help you resolve the black screen problem. Some technical problems just don't want to be solved it seems :( And thank you for posting again to update us on your situation, as that is very much appreciated.

I am not sure what the Steam policy is regarding buying, refunding, re-buying, then re-funding a second time*, but if you still like the look of the game then maybe consider trying again at some point in the future. As perhaps your black screen issue will resolve itself when there are some new drivers / RimWorld / Unity updates, or if/when you change your computer*. Either way thanks for checking out RimWorld to begin with, and sorry again that we couldn't help you resolve your technical problems.

* - Does Steam's 2 hour playing time / 14 day timer reset? If generally not then is there an exception for when a game does not work due to a technical issue?

So early this morning RimWorld stopped working on my computer. I left it running on my laptop when I brought it over to my friend's place and it had crashed when I reopened it. Every time since then it launches with a black screen and only music plays. I have unsubscribed from all mods, reinstalled, verified files, deleted the files in the steam common folder, deleted the files in the LocalLow folder, restarted, restarted and reinstalled, run as admin, run in compatibility mode, checked drivers (including directx), checked windows for updates, and every combination of these as well as several others. It ran just fine on my computer and in the space of 5-10 minutes went from working to not working no matter what we tried. It did not update nothing changed except it crashing. Every other game runs just fine on my computer and there are no viruses. I've really enjoyed your game so far and hope that some inexplicable bug isn't the end of my ability to play it.

@ sciman123 - Somebody else recently reported pretty much the exact same problem. The game worked fine, then there was some sort of system problem (crash in your case), and then RimWorld loads to a black screen (with music) every time they start the game.

Unfortunately that user hasn't (or hasn't yet) posted again with an update on their situation. But as milon said in the thread I linked, this really is very strange, and the only thing I can suggest right now on top of what you did is to check if your video driver recently got (automatically) updated or not, and maybe uninstall the game (and maybe manually delete all related files/folders again like you did) and run a registry cleaning utility. I'll go and poke some of the other moderators to see if they can offer up a possible solution if you get no joy.

ps. I assume you've already tried following all the steps (for Steam users) in the OP of this thread?
pps. The OP has a utility (step #5) to delete all RimWorld registry entries. So it's probably better for you to use that than a registry cleaning utility.

sciman - It would be very good if you'd post your log file! Find it in

Steam\SteamApps\common\RimWorld\RimWorld_Data\output_log.txt

This will help me determine the cause of the problem.

Calahan- I'll try that now.

Tynan- I've put it in the attachment below. Thanks for making such a fun game by the way. My friends and I are addicted.

Edit: For some reason when I attach the file it says nothing when I post or save the post.

Edit2: Of course it works when I edit it to say something is wrong.
