In my first game, I didnt know how to trade so I build my colony entirely out of what I could find.  The only weapons I had were looted from corpses.  Only built stuff out of what I could find.  Think it was in Alpha 5 at the time.  Has anyone else tried this?  Now that we can burn clothing and corpses to prevent clogging of inventory (or eating corpses... why does it keep coming back to eating people?) It is even more viable.

You should really build a colony out of the desert.
That's the lack of meat in your blood speaking.

well, it's not that hard to not trade at all in a game. I very rarely trade anyways.

I'm beginning to wonder if you really are a psychopathic, Canadian-based cannibal...

As for the OP, now I wanna try a desert playthrough without trading when I get home, should be interesting. :D

I love the mindset of gamers. Given a new feature to help keep our people alive and make the game more realistic, the first thing we think of is a way to kill people with it

true, it wasnt in the desert.  didnt have the choice.  now that campfires are in we are closer to the caveman mod of no technology at all!  plus the primitive medicine we can make.

honestly im not a psychopathic, Canadian-based cannibal.  Just whenever I play any game as a good player I die very quickly.  D&D? head gets cut off in the first round of the first fight with an expendable thug just because i suggested using the crit hit deck.  FTL? Every time i try to help people my ship gets trashed.  So my solution is to always play games trying to be as evil as possible.

I only really trade when I play on easier settings. On hard the raiders drop so much stuff that it isn't really necessary to buy anything. It's easier to strip corpses and burn everything you don't want. On easier settings I find I trade more since my colonists have more time to farm/craft and there are fewer weapon drops.

trading is good for bionics.

building a team of elite sniper cyborgs (careful shooters) asap, tends to be my first line of defense until my large killbox of doom is done. (my initial mini-killbox is just a simple exploding turret killbox that i use for emergencies.)

but yea, i reiterate. trading is good for bionics. (coz elite sniper cyborgs are so badass)  ;D

I never buy food, ever. Sell your potatoes, sell raider clothing (sells for quite a bit), buy plasteel and bionics to upgrade colonists and create bionics with mods. Trading isn't too useful without mods though it might just be me.

What do you guys do for medicine?

Good point, just gotta get lucky with random drops I guess, and no medicine unless absolutely necessary.

I personally need tons of medicine, partially to ensure no diseases get too bad, but also to make my extensive hospital wing. at 10 medicine packs a pop, those hospital beds sure do add up.

damn kids and your medical beds.  in my day we didnt have your fancy toys.  you got shot you just healed on your own and you liked it.

Yes, embrace that. That feeling of guilt you feel as you feed your prisoner the flesh of his fellows? That's just the protest of the weakness leaving you as you grow stronger.

Anyway, medicine feels like it should be the thing that kills me, but I think usually it's food. The problem is that a lot of times my doctors and my cooks are the same people, so after a battle there is that period where everything grinds to a halt while the wounded are cared for. During that time my food supply tends to dwindle, because the cooks are caring for wounded rather than making meals. I've lost at least one colony to starvation because of that.

In my first game i didnt know you could select or deselect jobs for people, so i had a lot of rough patches with food and meals lol
